Love What Your Children Are Becoming

I sat watching the falling snow from my window yesterday and reflected on past years. Time is so fleeting.

Our cute little six-year-old used to come home after school and spend hours sliding down the snow-laden hill behind the garage. She loved the splat her boots made in the mud puddle at the bottom. She and her husband now juggle their time between parenthood and running a million dollar business.

Our curly blonde two-year-old loved borrowing the neighbor boy’s trike. How could we get her a toy like that? She was only two. After she pilfered from the neighbor’s garage the third time, we bought her a  shiny red trike of her own. She now holds a master’s degree as a reading specialist and loves her own children as well as her kindergarten classes.

Our sweet teen lived her high school years with her grandmother as a roommate in her bedroom. She enjoyed fixing her grandmother’s hair and doing her nails. She is still giving compassionate service as an adult. Her church group just gathered over a thousand dollars worth of children’s books to donate to the poor in inner city Philadelphia.

Who was to know what elegant individuals these three oldest girls would become? What a blessing and an inspiration they are in our lives. We don’t know what life holds for us; we must direct it the best we can and enjoy the ride along the way.

“You must live in the present, launch yourself on every wave, find your eternity in each moment.” ~Henry David Thoreau
