Behind the Book: 101 Amazing Uses for Cinnamon

Author Nancy Chen shares what inspired her to write the book 101 Amazing Uses for Cinnamon. This book teaches the reader how to use the common household spice in 101 amazing and unexpected ways. Read along to learn more about the author and her writing process.

Drawing from Her Childhood

Growing up, cinnamon was one of the spices I always saw my mom reach for . . . and not just in cooking. It was used in our home, beauty treatments, and much more. (Did you know you can make hair masks with it?) Our spice cabinet was filled with curry powder, cumin, Sichuan peppercorns, star anise, and other spices that I couldn’t even name—but cinnamon was one I quickly became familiar with.

Holistic Wellness

As I got older I became interested in the holistic wellness space. I learned what my Chinese ancestors and other people around the world have known for thousands of years—spices not only help your food taste good, but they also have amazing, tangible effects on your health. Especially cinnamon, which has antibacterial and antifungal properties and has been shown in research studies to do anything from helping manage blood sugar to help prevent neurological diseases like Parkinson’s.

Home Remedies

As a wellness blogger, fitness instructor, marathon runner, and former competitive athlete, I’ve long turned to natural remedies to help maintain good health. I wanted to share what I learned with the world. This book is comprised of DIY beauty tips, feel-good recipes (that are also gluten-friendly), health research, arts and crafts, and home improvement hacks. They’re easy to implement and help you explore the facets of your health a little deeper. Helping you take your health back into your own hands. Think of this book as a home improvement guide, beauty magazine, cookbook, and health encyclopedia, all wrapped into one easy-to-use handbook.

Finding Something You Love

The most important part is falling in love with the health-improvement process. Slowing down and taking an assessment of how you feel and what you want to do to change or support it and discovering something new. Wellness isn’t one-size-fits-all, something I’ve had to learn the hard way. Discover what works for you and make adjustments as needed. This book is designed to help deliver you the information in an easily accessible format so you feel empowered to make conscious decisions about your own health and that of your loved ones (and have a little fun along the way!).

I hope you fall in love with cinnamon as much as I did—or at the very least, discover some amazing new uses for it that you haven’t thought of before.
